Talking Tips
1. Take time to talk every day
Talking can fit easily into your daily routine. Talk about the things you see when you're on the bus, walking to the shops, at the supermarket or during bath time. You could sing or recite a nursery rhyme to your baby when changing their nappy, or read a book together.
2. Be face to face
Have you ever tried to have a conversation with someone who is several feet taller than you? Its quite difficult! When you are talking to your child get down to their level and look at them. It also helps to get their attention if yoy say their name.
3. Follow your child's lead
Try and join in with their play for a little bit everyday. We all like to talk about the things that interest us. Watch and listen to what your child shows an interest in and respond to this.
4. Give choices
Offer children choices throughout the day. For example; "Would you like teddy or car?", "Would you like juice or milk?", What shall we put on next, socks or vest?" Giving choices helps children learn new words and gives them confidence.
5. Comment more than question
Describing, explaining and commenting helps children develop their understanding and learn new words Tell your children about things, especially the things they show an interest in. Describe what you are doing and comment on what they are doing.
6. Give children time to respond
Take turns to speak so they learn how conversation works. Try and pause for 10 seconds to give them time to say or do something. Be patient - it can take small children time to sort out what they want to say.
