Have you ever tried to have a conversation with someone who is several feet taller than you? Its quite difficult! When you are talking to your child get down to their level and look at them. It also helps to get their attention if yoy say their name.

Referral Process for Children 0-4 Years

h3>Department Provision

We are a team of Speech and Language Therapists based in the Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital who see children across Coventry.

How to refer your child for a Speech and Language Therapy assessment?

If you have concerns about your child's speech and language development you can:

  • Contact your child's Nursery Staff, Health Visitor, School Nurse or GP to discuss your concerns with them and ask them to refer your child to us.
  • Refer your child to us yourself by phoning us on (024) 76844187 or (024) 7644189 and fill in a referral form with one of our staff.

How long will I have to wait for my child to be seen?

If your child has not yet started their reception year they will be seen in our PreSchool Assessment Week, these are held every 2 months and we try to see the children within 3 months of them being referred to us.

You will receive a letter asking you to ring in and book an appointment in the Assessment Week and if you do not contact us your child will be discharged so it is really important to call for an appointment.

If you want some advice or want to see someone before your appointment you can come to our 'drop-in' clinics for 0-4 year olds which is held on the Thursday of our PreSchool Assessment Week. Please ring for the date and time of this session.

What if I have to cancel the appointment I have booked?

Please phone and tell us you can't make it, this will mean we don't discharge you. When you ring if possible, we will give you another appointment or you will get a letter for the next assessment week.

What do I do if I miss my appointment?

If you missed your child's appointment you will get a letter to say your have been discharged. If you are still concerned please ring as soon as possible as you will have to wait 3 months for the next appointment.

How long will we see your child for?

Our service looks after children with language difficulties until they are 7 years old. For children with speech, voice or fluency difficulties we will see you until you are 16.
