6. Give children time to respond

Take turns to speak so they learn how conversation works. Try and pause for 10 seconds to give them time to say or do something. Be patient - it can take small children time to sort out what they want to say.

[ 23 Mar 2009] When you are playing with your child, join in with their talking and name the item they are pointing to. When your child says something, repeat it back to them, and add a word. E.g. Child says: “cat” Parent says: “yes, cat, a black cat”. Adding a word helps your child to make longer sentences and develops their vocabulary.
