6. Give children time to respond

Take turns to speak so they learn how conversation works. Try and pause for 10 seconds to give them time to say or do something. Be patient - it can take small children time to sort out what they want to say.

Octobers Top Tip : Identifying sounds

[ 07 Oct 2008]

Before children can learn to recognise and identify the sounds in words they need to be able to recognise natural sounds, and to identify things around them by the sound they make.  This helps to develop auditory discrimination and auditory memory.

Go for a walk outside and encourage your child to stop and listen to the sounds around them eg listening to sound of bees, birds and transport electric gadgets. The adult models the sounds heard eg "buzzzzz - It's a bee."
This could be developed so that the child closes their eyes and identifies the object from the sounds they hear.
